The drought-starved Mississippi River is expected to remain open to barge traffic for at least a month, according to KTVI in St. Louis. Here in Arkansas, today’s reading at Helena was more than 17 feet, with the river expected to rise to more than 18 feet by Saturday. Rain and snow in December was helping boost river levels. Reuters reports worries upstream about the effects of ice on barge traffic.
