Rainfall deficits shrinking

Is drought recovery really just around the corner?  According to the National Weather Service, during the first half of September, central and southern Arkansas began to experience some drought relief.   This was good news indeed. These areas received two to four times the normal rainfall and some, like the Pine Bluff area, even ended up with a surplus.  Although this news gives us all hope, news for the upper north central counties and in the western corner was not so good.  There, rainfall amounts remained at or dismally below normal.  Although conditions are definitely improving in Arkansas, significant deficits remain (see graphic).  Moreover, nearly three-quarters of the state remains in at least severe drought.  Read more …
